November Author Showcase Featuring Erika Shephard: Being Transgender – A Candid Conversation In-Person

November 6 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Transgenderism: Lately, it’s in the news, a subject of endless comments, debates and memes on social media. But what is it? Is it a natural human variation, a delusion or worse — a perversion? How does any person know they are trans?

Local author and speaker Erika Shepard will address such questions to help us understand and navigate the changing social landscape around transgenderism. For this program at the South Whatcom Library she will make a short presentation on the subject, then open the floor to questions—questions she strongly encourages. The discussion that follows will be frank, open, and proceed in a way that lets you know it’s all right to ask.

Erika Shepard is a retired geologist, transgender woman, and the author of two books. Her first, a memoir, is titled Trans-Formations – From Field Boots to Sensible Heels and was awarded First-Place in the Journeys category at the 2024 Chanticleer Book Reviews conference. Her second book, a novel titled Abomination Child received a five-star review from Chanticleer and has been submitted for the 2025 awards at Chanticleer. She is currently working on a third book, a historical fiction novel that follows two widowed women in 1870’s Kansas as they struggle to survive in a hostile patriarchal culture.
